Ingrid McKay—Service, Faith, Family

It only takes a few moments to discern what’s most important to Ingrid McKay. As a customer care representative for Pearl Insurance in New York, Ingrid enjoys assisting customers with their life and health policies. And her faith keeps her going as a devoted mother to her son, Isaiah.

How She Serves

Ingrid has served the company for 13 years and is good at what she does. In her position, she answers billing and claims questions for the company’s life and health products, processes premium payments and returned mail, and responds to members’ email queries. She also checks on insureds’ disability and refund status. Ingrid works collaboratively with CSEA Insurance department claims, sales, auto/home, and billing departments every day.

“One of the things I like most about my job is talking to the insureds on a daily basis,” Ingrid says. “I enjoy helping them resolve their issues and receive their benefits.”

Ingrid loves that Pearl is generous with donations. “My favorites are the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. That’s because I have had loved ones who have been affected by cancer and heart disease.”

And Ingrid loves that the people of Pearl are not only concerned with work, but with the personal aspects of employees’ lives as well. Codie Montanye, Director of Human Resources, is one example. “I want to give a shoutout to Codie—when Isaiah tore his ACL, she helped me a lot with the paperwork and everything needed to make the process go a little more smoothly.”

What Sustains Her

“My faith helps me stay strong in difficult times,” Ingrid explains. “I usually say a silent prayer and ask for guidance in my life and my son’s life.”

Born in Jamaica, Ingrid immigrated to the U.S. when she was 14. “My family came here for the opportunity to work and make a better life for me and my siblings.” Ingrid has family living in Jamaica, Canada, England, and the U.S.

“Isaiah and I went to Jamaica last year for his first visit,” Ingrid says. “It made me so happy to see him embrace his roots.”

In her spare time, Ingrid enjoys reading and cooking. What are her favorite dishes to make? Jamaican, of course! “My specialty is jerk chicken with rice and beans.”

Ingrid is known for her big heart and jovial personality. “What do I miss most during shelter-in-place? I miss the interaction with my coworkers.”

Who Motivates Her

“My son, Isaiah, is my pride and joy,” Ingrid shares. “I’m always bragging about him at work. I’m a very proud mom. He’s named after my favorite book in the Bible.”

Later this month, Isaiah will graduate from Christian Brothers Academy, a Catholic military school in Albany. “Isaiah is the fourth African American in the school’s 150-year history to become cadet colonel. I’m so proud of him!”

The two visited Yale, Harvard, and Brown before committing to Notre Dame. Isaiah will study management consulting there.

Ingrid and Isaiah live in a suburb of Albany County. Right now, she enjoys deep conversations with Isaiah, talking about his future, and taking walks before he goes away to college.

“My favorite quote is, ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff.’ Don’t let the simple things take over your life. Focus on the bigger issues.” For Ingrid, that means staying true to herself and her values.
